About Red Lily Health

The Red Lily Health Board Aboriginal Corporation (RLHB) was formed in 2011 to empower Aboriginal people of the West Arnhem region and address the health issues they face through providing leadership and governance in the development of quality, effective primary health care services, with a long-term vision of establishing a regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service.

Thanks to ongoing expansion, we now have an exciting opportunity for a General Practitioner looking to make a difference in the community.

About the Benefits

About the Role

A key tenet of your role will involve the integration of Indigenous cultural imperatives in the delivery of healthcare in the context of an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service

You’ll achieve this by splitting your time primarily between clinical services and organisational duties, as well as occasional interactions with Health Advisory Groups as needed (e.g. providing responsive health advice at the request of local communities).

This is a unique opportunity to work with one of the world’s oldest living cultures, with unique clinical presentations as a result of the remote nature of the community.

This is a part-time position (ranging from 0.3 FTE to 0.6 FTE depending on your preference) that will see you travelling from Darwin one day a week, to Minjilang and Warruwi communities to provide clinical services, leaving another one day each fortnight for reviewing results, case conferencing, care planning, general admin, etc.

Candidates who wish to transition to a full-time role in their second year of employment will also have the opportunity to strategise broader health promotion initiatives in the community.

This role provides a unique opportunity for a GP to split their time between remote indigenous primary care in an ACCHS service, and mainstream urban GP practice, for example. Alternatively, it is an opportunity for the successful applicant looking for a balance between work and family, or those looking to combine work with their personal research and/or study goals.

Note: you will travel to and from the islands one day per week, leaving another one day each fortnight for following up on results, strategising, admin, etc.

About You

You’ll draw on your experience working with remote communities to advance the health outcomes of the Aboriginal community in the West Arnhem region of the Northern Territory. Having completed your fellowship, you will be a General Practitioner with experience working in a remote setting and ideally with some professional exposure to Aboriginal communities.

Other requirements include:

  • Experience working in chronic disease management
  • Some exposure to PCIS electronic health record (or similar)
  • A respect for Aboriginal peoples as well as cultural awareness/sensitivity

This role will suit a GP currently working in a clinic or hospital in Darwin on a part-time basis who is looking to pick up extra work with a tangible impact on the lives of locals. Candidates outside of the NT will also be considered, with relocation assistance on offer for those looking to move interstate for the position.

About the Area

During your time at Red Lily, you will split your time between two alcohol-free Aboriginal settlements: Warruwi and Minjilang. Here, you’ll be interacting with one of the world’s oldest living cultures to directly impact health outcomes, and establish a permanent GP service for the community that is informed by the unique needs of the locals.

Minjilang is the main Aboriginal settlement on Croker Island, sitting on the pristine waters of the Arafura Sea approximately 250km north-east of Darwin and home to flora and fauna unlike anywhere else in the world.

Warruwi is the main township on South Goulburn Island, approximately 300km east of Darwin at the eastern base of the Cobourg Peninsula. The island has a mix of natural landscapes including pristine beaches, marshlands and rocky outcrops harbouring an abundance of unique wildlife.

As your services will only be required on a part time basis (initially at least), you will have plenty of time to explore the islands and their surroundings. Whether it’s for fishing, hiking, swimming or research, you will have ample opportunity to explore the region’s idyllic landscape.

As there is no accommodation on the islands, you will commute there from Darwin each day using scheduled passenger services from FlyTiwi.

This is a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of locals in a part of the world unlike any other. Apply now!
